What Does a Professional Car Detail Actually Involve?

Professional mobile car detailing in progress on a driveway in Truro, Cornwall

There is a big difference between a quick valet and a full detail, and most people genuinely do not know what they are paying for when they book one. The word "detailing" gets used for everything from a rushed wash to a full day of skilled work, so it is worth explaining exactly what happens when I detail a car properly.

My approach comes straight from my time finishing superyachts. Every stage in order, nothing rushed, nothing skipped. On a yacht there is no cutting corners, because the finish is the product. The same mindset is what I bring to every car I detail across Truro and Cornwall.

Valeting versus detailing

These two words get muddled all the time, so here is the simple version.

  • Valeting is cleaning the car to a high standard. A good wash, the interior tidied, the car looking fresh.
  • Detailing goes further. It corrects and protects the car, restores the finish, and treats every surface properly. You are not just cleaning the car, you are improving its condition.

A full detail is the difference between a car that looks clean today and a car that looks genuinely cared for and stays that way.

The full process, stage by stage

Here is what a proper detail looks like from start to finish. The order matters, because each stage protects the work in the next one.

  1. 1
Wheels, arches and tyres. Always first. This is the dirtiest part of the car, cleaned with its own dedicated kit so none of that grime ever reaches the paintwork.
  2. 2
Engine bay (if booked). Done early and carefully, away from the freshly washed paint, so any cleaning products are dealt with before the wash stage.
  3. 3
Pre-wash and snow foam. A clinging foam lifts and softens the bonded grime before anything touches the surface.
  4. 4
The safe contact wash. A careful, two-bucket wash in straight lines that cleans the paint without dragging grit across it.
  5. 5
Decontamination. Specialist treatments and a clay stage remove embedded fallout, tar and bonded contaminants that a normal wash leaves behind.
  6. 6
Drying. Done with soft towels and a drying aid, never left to air dry, to avoid water spots etching into the paint.
  7. 7
Machine polishing or paint enhancement (where included). This removes swirls and restores deep gloss.
  8. 8
Protection. A sealant, a quality wax, or a ceramic coating to shield the finish and keep it looking its best for months.
  9. 9
Interior. A thorough vacuum, surfaces cleaned and dressed, glass cleaned streak-free, and leather treated where needed.
  10. 10
Final inspection and reveal. A full walk-around to check every panel, the glass, the shuts and the tyres, and the driveway left clean and tidy.

The clue is in the name

Detailing is exactly that. The detail. Anyone can make a car look better from ten feet away. The real work shows up close. Clean door shuts, properly dressed tyres, streak-free glass, no product residue left in the trim, and a tidy driveway when I leave.

For me, the experience matters as much as the result. A premium car deserves a premium service from start to finish, and that includes how the whole job is handled, not just how shiny the bonnet is at the end.

Mobile detailing, I come to you

The best part is you do not have to go anywhere. VaporWave Vehicle Services is fully mobile across Truro, Falmouth, Penryn, Newquay, St Austell, Redruth, Camborne and the surrounding Cornwall villages. I arrive fully equipped and detail your car at your home or workplace.

Whether you want a regular maintenance clean to keep on top of things, or a full detail with paint correction and ceramic protection, the work is built around your car and what it actually needs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a full car detail take?

It depends on the size and condition of the car and the package booked. A maintenance clean is a few hours. A full detail with paint correction can be a full day. Quality work takes time, which is why everything is booked in advance.

What is the difference between a maintenance clean and a full detail?

A maintenance clean keeps an already-protected car looking fresh. A full detail goes much deeper, with decontamination, paint enhancement and proper protection, to restore and safeguard the finish.

Do I need to provide anything for a mobile detail?

I arrive with professional equipment and products. If I need access to a water supply or a power point, I will let you know when we confirm your booking, so everything is sorted before I arrive.

How often should I get my car detailed?

A full detail once or twice a year, with maintenance washes in between, keeps most cars looking excellent. If the car lives outside or covers high mileage on Cornish roads, a little more often is worth it.

Where in Cornwall do you cover?
